BLOOD TEST REQUIREMENTS BEFORE SURGERY
The following is a list of what you would be requested from the lab for your blood work
- Full Hemogram
- BUN & Creatinine
- Tromboplastine Time
- Protrombin Time
You would also need to have an EKG done if you are over 40 years old or have any cardio condition, the requirement of a stress test would be determined by the doctor based on the results of the tests and your over all condition.
ANESTHESIA ON SURGERY
At the time of surgery the type of anesthesia will be determined by the surgeon according to your particular case and it is the Hospital’s standard procedure that every surgical patient is on a respirator, This respirator can be a tube in the throat or a mask on the face, since your safety is the most important for us, we consider that it is not safe to do surgery without a respirator because it is a useful equipment that allows the specialists to monitor all of the patients vital signs. When surgeries last more than an hour local anesthetic is not suitable and even in those cases the respirator is often needed.
The difference between general anesthetic and sedation is simply the dosage given. In both cases, only the necessary dosage is given to the patient to maintain a meticulous balance so he or she would remain unconscious and with no awareness or memories of the procedures.
Many patients have the interest in do more than one procedure because of the convenience of being in Costa Rica and since they are going to need the recovery time, they can have other surgeries done at the same time as well, which ends up in a cost effective trip saving money on the treatments and also on the recovery time doing it all together rather than to have it done separately.
The ideal scenario would be if a patient does not smoke at all as is proven that there is less oxygenation to the skin in people who smoke that makes recovery slower. The best recommendation would be to cut down as much as possible before and after the surgery. Even if the patient quits for at least three days before surgery, it would definitely help in getting rid of the carbon monoxide present in your blood.
There are two consequences for the cardiovascular system from smoking that concerns surgeons and anesthesiologists:
Smoking increases the concentration of higher carbon monoxide levels in the blood. This has the effect of decreasing oxygen supply. Carbon monoxide also decreases the heart’s pump and also reduces the amount of oxygen that is delivered to the body.
Nicotine increases body’s oxygen demand. So, oxygen supply is compromised as more oxygen is being utilized.
Smoking may also cause other kinds of problems:
- Patient is more likely infection in the wound
- Smoking can cause formation of blood clots near the wound
- It can also make the stitches to come apart. This could lead to heavy scarring
- Smoking also deposits mucus in the lungs. This leads to frequent colds and even pneumonia
- It reduces the Vitamin C levels in the body, which is essential for wound healing
- For those reasons the patient may undergo a longer and more expensive stay in the hospital or experience expensive prolonged post surgical treatment
- It increases people’s heart rate 10 to 20 beats/minute meaning that the heart is works harder and requires more oxygen and nutrients.
- Increases blood pressure 5 to 10 mm Hg.
- Increases blood’s sugar level. This higher level causes the red blood cells to become “sticky”. When this happens, they may stick together and then be unable to travel through the smallest vessels that are called capillaries. Tissue nourished by these vessels will not receive all the blood flow they require.
- Increases the chance for platelets to clump together. This can result in blood clots that cause strokes, heart attacks or damage to other tissues.
A surgery designed to remove wrinkles of the face. In this procedure excess skin is lifted and then removed. Incisions are made on front of and around the ears towards the patient’s hairline. Depending on the case fat tissue could be removed to sculpt and detail the face as well.
The incisions are hardly visible after the healing. Final results and how much the restoration lasts would depend the patient’s care of the skin after the surgery with proper skin care products. Frequent use of sun block and proper nutrition are very important as well.
This procedure is to remove wrinkles of the forehead or a difference on eyebrows height trough small incisions inside the forehead’s hairline
EYELIDS / BLEPHAROPLASTY
This procedure corrects upper and lower droopy eyelids, bags under the eyes by removing excess skin and fat pads from the eyelids. The incisions are not visible after the healing; on upper eyelids, incisions are placed on the fold and on the lower lids would be placed directly under the eyelashes. The recovery would be of about 10 days and the patient should avoid sun for about a month.
The lower eyelid Fat Pads or “Bags” are very common in the lower eyelids as we age, this bags are fat pads building that can be improved by an invisible incision under the eyelash or inside the lid.
is the development of ‘bags’, which are in most cases due to an outward bulging of the fat pads behind the lower lids. These ‘bags’ of fat can be improved by conservative removal through an invisible incision on the inside of the lower lid (trans-conjunctival approach) in patients that do not require skin excision, or through the under-eyelash (sub-ciliary approach) in patients that are having some excess lower lid skin removed.
Cheeks are very important in how the persons face looks like and actually cheek augmentation emphasizes the cheeks making a person look younger by placing a solid implant over the cheekbone. Cheek implants are frequently combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as chin augmentation, face-lift or neck-lift.
Chin implants come in a variety of shapes and the best one will be selected according to the patient’s face and the result she or he wants to achieve. The implants can be placed through a small incision under the chin or intraoral without any visible scars and the recovery is about one week.
EARS / OTOPLASTY
Otoplasty is a surgery to correct the ears protrusion and the incision is done behind the ear so it won’t be visible. The procedure would require the surgeon to remove the appropriate amount of cartilage and skin necessary to achieve the desired result trimming the cartilage until the desired shape is achieved and then the cartilage is pinned with permanent sutures to secure it in place.
Regarding lip augmentation, there are two options available:
1. Synthetic hyaluronic acid based fillers like Surgederm or Restylane , This fillers works on the red area of the lips, but is not permanent – The results of this synthetic fillers will disappear completely within a year.
2. Dermis Fat grafting – Normally the best option to choose: this is done with fat extracted from other parts on the patient’s body and then it would be processed and prepared to be inserted under the lip. There will be some degree of absorption of the fat injected but unlike fillers this grafting is mostly permanent.
In cases where the patient has lines above the upper lip; fillers would be the most recommended option as their absorption is more predictable but this will be determined when the patient is evaluated in person. The reason is because fat could have lots of absorption in that area which can make the results less predictable.
Rhinoplasty or many times called nose job is to improve or reshape the nose looks. It can be done to correct deformities after an accident, to correct an obstruction and help the patient breathe better or as a cosmetic procedure to improve appearance. The procedure may require removing, reshaping or adding cartilage or even ad filling materials that could come from other parts off the body or synthetic implants. There incision will be internal and it won’t be visible, sutures are also inner and are self absorbable. Patient would have to use a splint on the nose for some days and sometimes gauze inside of the nose for a few days is necessary as well. Patient will experience swelling and bruising for a week to ten days. This is an outpatient procedure (in most cases) and it is not a very painful. Sutures are inner and absorbable.
This procedure is minimally invasive and the rejuvenation effect is achieved by relaxing the facial muscles with Botox that results in minimizing expression lines on the face such as crow`s feet, forehead lines, smoker’s lips, neck and more. The first effects can be noticed in 4 or 5 days, but full effect is established after 3 weeks. Results would last from 4 to 6 months. The procedure would take about ten minutes through tiny injections applied on the area that needs to be improved. Botox is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
